Picapot Irrigation Controller

Build a self-sufficient off-grid watering system

The controller, the firmware, and the soil moisture sensor are open source.

  • It can control 12 V loads such as solenoid valves, water pumps, or relays, up to 30 W.
  • Waterings can follow the sunrise and sunset throughout the year, and the amount of water is automatically adjusted according to the season.
  • A temperature-moisture sensor will tell the Control Unit when to skip watering due to excess humidity or frost.
Controller without the cover

In this project, the controller is powered by a small 12 V solar panel, charger, and battery, making the system fully autonomous.

Irrigation system schema

The system fits inside a 30 × 30 × 15 cm IP68-rated metal enclosure, ensuring long-term protection against the elements.

Installation n.1, running in Malta since 2020.

The controller was developed and tested in Malta, a Mediterranean island with a very hot summer climate, where irrigation systems must withstand intense sun and high evaporation.
