Picapot Controller & Sensor
An open-source, self-sufficient, off-grid watering system
- Built with durable, replaceable components, the system is designed to remain repairable and operational for decades.
- The controller can drive 12 V DC loads, such as solenoid valves, water pumps, or relays, with a maximum continuous power consumption of 30 W.
- The advanced firmware offers multiple watering programs and a range of useful configurations your plants will love!
- The soil-moisture and temperature sensor can skip watering when the soil is too wet or when frost is detected, and increase watering during heatwaves.
- A large display makes information and settings easy to read.

In this project, the controller is powered by a small 12 V solar panel, charger, and battery, making the system fully autonomous.

The system fits inside a 30 × 30 × 15 cm IP68-rated metal enclosure, ensuring long-term protection against the elements.

Why solar power instead of the power grid?
- A solar-powered system continues operating during power outages, especially important when nobody is available to restore a tripped breaker.
- It can be installed directly beside the water source, even when no convenient electrical outlet is available.
- It avoids the cost and complexity of installing weatherproof mains wiring outdoors.
Why solar power instead of disposable batteries?
- The battery is recharged automatically, eliminating routine replacements while reducing waste and long-term operating costs.
- The system can support more demanding loads, such as solenoid valves and small pumps.
- Disposable-battery systems often use motorized or latching valves, which may remain open if power fails during irrigation. Picapot uses a normally closed valve that shuts off automatically when power is lost.
